Swimmers make a splash on the first day of competition

The first day of competition for the swimmers began February 22 at the Cranbrook RecPlex. The final heats are yet to begin, but the excitement among competitors, coaches and officials is growing. The first round of medals will be presented Friday afternoon.

Stan Saliken, the 2008 BC Winter Games sports chair for swimming, said the games are good for athletes and the sport alike.

"I'm happy the Winter Games are here," said Saliken. "I'm hoping it will give swimming a boost in Cranbrook. This is a great sport and it builds great character."

There are 148 athletes in the swimming competition, including 20 multi-disability competitors.
