Speedskaters off to fast start



Tori Spence of Kamloops won two silver medals on the first night of speedskating at the BC Winter Games. The 15-year-old won these in the 1000 and 777 metre races.
In her seventh year of skating, she has been to one other winter games and has also gone to a summer game in the Triathlon. She is going on the the Provincials and is confident re the Nationals. Tori comes by her interest for the sport from her mother who she said was a world champion in speedskating.

Ashley Nelson of Crescent Valley {skating out of the Nelson club}, won a bronze medal in the 1000 metre race on the first night of racing at the BC Winter Games. She said the she was "happy with her race" She will be heading to the Provincials in Kelowna.

She is not sure if she is ready for making it to the Nationals as she has just recovered from a dislocated hip in December and is not 100%. This is her second winter games.

More than 1,500 participants are in Kimberley and Cranbrook for the Games, which wrap up Sunday.
