Gordon Terrace ahead of the game

Students at Gordon Terrace Elementary School in Cranbrook are excited about the BC Winter Games coming to their city, so much so that they have already staged their own mini-Games at Idlewild Park.
"Our school is housing the hockey players, so we decided to do our own mini-Games," said David Standing, principal of the kindergarten to Grade 6 school.
Standing said the entire school, all 274 students, participated in such events as snowshoeing, sliding, skating and a hike around the park. One of the more fun events was "smoosh-boarding," which Standing described as "a three-legged race on boards in the snow."
Laurie Reed, director of promotions for the Kimberley-Cranbrook 2008 Winter Games, described the day as "a colourful and entertaining day of school spirit, healthy activity and plain old 'roll-in-the-snow' fun."
Gordon Terrace's mini-Games took place Feb. 7. Students are now looking forward to the BC Winter Games themselves, which happen Feb. 21 to 24.
